While the majority of fans watching the PDRA World Finals were focused on the points championship battle going on between Marcus Butner and Tommy Franklin, class veteran Billy Albert quietly put together a dream weekend in Virginia, capped off by his first career win in the class. Driving his Albert Racing Engines-equipped, Structural Mechanical ’20 Camaro, Albert used a 3.679 elapsed time at 207.08 mph to narrowly take down No. 1 qualifier Tim Paap’s 3.687 at 206.16 in his Killin’ Time Racing Paap Auto Body ’16 Corvette.
“It’s been a long time coming. It feels really good,” Albert said when asked about holding his very first PDRA 660 Man. “We’ve been fighting a problem almost all year with the car; it had to do with the lockup, the Ty-Drive, and the transmission. So we’ve had a fast car all year, it just looked like it wasn’t. Once Todd Tutterow and Rickie Smith helped us get it sorted out and we got everything working properly, then it showed itself and it gives you more confidence in your driving and in your car. Having them is everything. You can’t buy knowledge like that. You can only get that help to you and I’m glad they’re there to help us and lead us in the right direction. It just fell into place and worked.”
Starting out of the No. 3 qualifying position Saturday night, Albert would defeat Elizabeth City, North Carolina’s Brian Teachman in the opening round with a 3.646 at 207.75 mph. In the quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon, Albert would briefly throw the season championship into chaos, using a starting line advantage and 3.702 at 206.13 mph to take down points leader Marcus Butner in the Pat Musi-powered “Heartbreaker” ’69 Camaro and his 3.714 at 205.91. In the semifinals, Albert lined up against John Vergotz Jr., whose impressive Pro Nitrous debut would come to an end. Vergotz Jr. visibly left the line first with a .051 reaction time to Albert’s .133, but encountered issues and slowed to a 4.036 at 185.87. Albert, meanwhile, stayed consistent with a 3.706 at 205.41.
Despite his round two loss to Albert, reigning world champion Marcus Butner still clinched his second consecutive Pro Nitrous championship shortly thereafter, as Tommy Franklin would also bow out in the second round. Despite a quicker 3.701 at 210.28 in his Musi-powered “Jungle Rat 3.0,” Franklin lost on a holeshot to Dale Brinsfield, who ran 3.746 at 202.70.
The Fuel injection, Ignition and Nitrous systems are all controlled by the EFI Technology R8 ECU.
